Spotting real and fake Kånken (UPDATED)

Hey!

I'm sure everyone would be aware, but lately the Kånken bag trend has been on the rise. Kånken is a bag brand from Sweden, and their bags have been featured in countless blogs, be it on platforms such as tumblr or Pinterest.

Here's a pic of the lilac Kånken I got recently along with my OOTD!

That being said, there are many Kånken bags online, and some of them are replicas. Sadly, there have been many dishonest sellers who sell fake kankens at high prices which can pretty much afford you an authentic one if you find it at the right price.

This is especially prominent on platforms such as Carousell, where sellers claim that their Kånken bags are authentic and charge exhorbitant prices for the fake bags, prices ranging from $20+ (most of these people are honest and admit that their kankens are replicas- replicas are very very cheap) to $100+ SGD (you can pretty much buy a real Kånken at that price)

So that's the thing:

How do you know if you're buying a real one?
I've decided to create a guide so that people will understand how to identify a real and fake Kånken, and hopefully, you won't be fooled or cheated by those dishonest people who claim they've got "the real thing"

Which websites to purchase Kånken bags from:

There are many many websites out there, selling real kankens, and also fake ones.

A very trusted and popular site among people I know who bought kankens is http://www.ilovemykanken.com/
This website carries AUTHENTIC kankens, not fake ones. I'd highly recommend this one as it has free international shipping, and also a discount code for purchases (20% off)

Another site would be by the very company that created the bag: Fjallraven

There are also different companies that you can buy Kånken bags from such as Urban Outfitters.
I would not recommend any marketplace websites such as Qoo10 etc. because independent sellers sell their bags there and hence the authenticity is questionable depending on the seller.

If you don't want to buy the Kånken bag at full price:
Now here's the good part: you do not have to spend over a hundred dollars on a Kånken bag (that's the average cost in SGD if you buy from any stores

I personally bought my Kånken bag on Carousell, in tip top condition, so I'll give you a guide on how to find the real thing.

Let's get this straight: Kånken does not have any "factory rejects" out for sale. They do have an outlet in Europe just one in Sweden I believe, but the kankens there should look every bit like the real one, so don't buy from anyone claiming they have supplies "direct from the factory". Oh hell no they don't.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FACTORY STOCKS OR REJECTS.

And let's be honest - do you really think that someone who brings the real deal back from Europe is going to charge you any cheaper than around $100 which is retail price? No, not unless they've already used it.

1. Reflective logo
I'm not all too sure about this one, but apparently the central Kånken logo should be reflective, not matte. It also shouldn't be a layer of gloss over a print, it's just a nicely sown on, good quality logo. However, I've bought fake kankens before (realised it was fake and luckily I got a refund) and I realise it's not that easy to identify via logo.

Make sure that it doesn't feel rough - the fake one I got previously had a logo that felt like sandpaper or the rough material on a nailfile. The original one should be smooth.

2. All the dots are there:
The a's in the Fjällräven Kånken logo should have its "a" printed as "å" and "ä"
However, please beware, fakes have this too (very often)

This logo has to be sewn on properly as well and not curl in any particular direction- it lies flat on your bag.

3. The fox button and WASA logo.
To me, this is one of the most distinctive signs:
The fox button has to look like this:

I've bought fakes before, and they look vastly different. You can pretty much tell which one is fake and which one is real. This is truly the best way to identify. The buttons should also be the same size throughout, regardless of model.

Also, the back of the button should have a WASA6 logo:

However, high grade replicas can have this too, so make sure both are there.

4. Zips.
The side of the zips should have YKK printed on it (it's a zipper supplier) and the fjallraven prints.

UPDATE: My lilac kanken mini does not have YKK on the zips, but the normal sized fog kanken I had does have it.

My mini kanken zips look like this:

That being said, I'm not sure if the fake ones have this

5. Material tag:
Make sure that the Kånken you buy has the model printed correctly
For the classic Kånken, the tag should say 23510- Kånken, and the number changes to 23561 for kanken mini.

Kanken's main material should be polyvinyl alcohol and not anything else.

Kanken is either produced in Vietnam of China - no other places. Do check the colour is correct in chinese as well as the code number (google translate would be a useful tool if chinese is not your native language)

6. Packaging. Kånken should come with a tag giving the correct code number. However, some sellers may remove it as they have used it. My Kånken didn't come with that tag, but it came with this:
(Sorry it's so folded)

But it's a Kånken catalog brochure. I do advise people who buy their kankens to keep this as evidence because it's part of proving authenticity (some people could just stick theirs into a fake one so don't take this as absolute evidence).
Kånken should also come with this thin grey foam padding that keeps it in shape when being sold.

7. Material
It should feel abit like a soft raincoat material almost, and not any crackly material which I am told fakes do have. Take a feel of your bag and ruffle it around a bit to check.

Love,
Khione

  1. I intend to get a Fajllraven Kanken Daypack from Amazon. Before I made an order for the one sold by amazon, there was a table showing other sellers that were also selling the same item. So I clicked on several sellers' frontstores and realised that even the price listed was different from the one sold/handled by Amazon, the information provided, answered questions and the reviews are the same. Since items sold by amazon are trustworthy, I will have no doubt getting the one from amazon,
but I'm sure if other sellers are selling the same item, imported from the same place. Sorry, English isn't my first language.

    4. It seems to be fake. The websites appear to be different because the real website's header has mens, womens, kids, bags and gear while the kjhxvsl.com has kanken large, kanken medium, and kanken small on the header

  2. Just to point out - I have a real one and recently (accidentally) purchased a fake from ebay. It had all of the things listed above but here is how I notices it was counterfeit:
    1) The material sound crackly when moves around
    2) The material did not have a smooth dry coating and felt thinner
    3) The buttons at the end of the straps were larger than the original
    4) Look at the straps of the bag from the top - the seam of the main compartment should be absolutely in the middle of the 2 straps
    5) The logo on the buttons should show the head as pretty much vertical and not curling inwards
    6) The logo at the front felt rough - it should feel pretty smooth

  6. Hello , I would like to ask that how do you differentiate a real kanken no 2 from a fake one ...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I only have a genuine one so can't compare but the material should be quite thick/stiff. The zippers have the brand name on one side and the logo on the other. The button logos should be nicely embossed with a dark infill and have WASA on the reverse. The front logo and top straps should be nice thick leather with a suede-y feel to them- the leather is wrapped over webbing straps in a sand colour- where you can see the reverse (The bottom corner tabs and the loop round the top straps) the back of the leather is soft almost fluffy.

Inner labels there should be three plus a small code label behind- first is model codes and production location (vietnam) this label is woven and different texture to those underneath, 2nd is materials (65% nylon, 35% cotton) and care instructions, 3rd is what seems to be production info in characters I can't identify (I assume vietnamese)

All stitching should be good quality and uniform and the construction of the bag should be symmetrical, the top and bottom seams should be in the middle of the bag.

    3. Hi there, Kirsten. So have you done some research if the Kanken you bought from Lazada is authentic?

      Delete
    4. Not very good experience with lazada. The price is too good to be true so i bought one. It has everything mentioned above from the brown tag with the coloured logo, the ykk zipper, button, wasa 6 or 9, but the material does not seem right. It is too soft. The buttons looks almost right but the real one has a flatter surface. Side pocket seams should be 1" but the fake one is 1cm. I must say lazada one is 95% there compared to my real one.

    5. Lazada is a marketplace with independent sellers, hence it is not guaranteed authentic

  11. Hello please help. I bought the bag online and the zips are YKK on both sides. But when I went to google more about how to prove authenticity of kanken, somebody said it should be YKK on one side and SHA on the other side. And also, the foam in the bag I purchased is black.

    So is mine authentic?

    1. I think it doesn't matter if the fake is what's for you. The issue here is if you buy a Kanken thinking it's real (probably paying the price for the real deal too) and not getting it. Fakes are incredibly cheap, and people shouldn't use them as a way to swindle others.

  17. Hey everyone! So I want to buy a fjallraven kanken mini this week before I go on my trip. While researching websites with quick shipping I found a shop in Vancouver, BC, Canada called "fjallraven" (and it's linked with the official fjallraven website). The thing is, I read a google review saying that they sell bags that are made in china. Do you think this is an official trustworthy store? Thanks!

  18. Melissa, I work for Fjallraven. There are no fake Fjallraven stores, you can go there, and the staff are all very cool people. :) Some of our products are made in China & Vietnam, and we have strict relationships with suppliers in terms of labor.

  20. i've just bought a kanken from a seller on depop called 'the kanken shop'. the bag itself cost £36 with £3 shipping and it took about 3 weeks to arrive. i've looked at a lot of articles about distinguishing fake and real kankens and mine seems to be real except for the brown tags it came with didn't have the white sticker with the bar code on it and none of the zips say 'YKK' or anything like that on them. they do however have tiny 'g's with dots over the top on the side of the zip. i've never seen that been mentioned anywhere. the material sounds slightly crackly but i don't have the sound of a fake kanken to compare it with. is mine real??

  25. Just wanted to add my 2c. I've got a Fjallraven myself and I've noticed 95% of the people with Fjallravens (in Sydney) are young Asian women particularly Chinese international students at my university. 63. Filipinos love designer name brands. Anywhere you are in the country; you will readily observe a lot of people wearing designer clothes and carrying branded handbags. Of the most popular bag name brands, the most popular among Filipinos include Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Chanel. If Hermes https://luxurybagscebu.com/collections/frontpage/products/authentic-hermes-jypsiere-28 bags were more affordable, it is likely you will see more in the hands of Filipinos. But Hermes bags, depending on the model could cost as much as a small car or a condominium.

  67. I just bought mine from Urban Outfitters (UO) and it seems to be a FAKE for these reasons:
    1. Logo - A's with the dots are too big and A with the circle is merged with the letter itself
    2. Inside stitching near the tag is not parallel. It looks like a low quality mess
    3. Inside sewn owner tag has purveyor to the royal court of Sweden on it even though it is supposed to be on the outside paper tag. Also, the Swedish flag is not perfectly symmetrical
    4. Inside identifier tag says material is 100% vinylal and the Chinese information does not match what was on this blog
    5. Outside tag's website is not the bubbly red that Fjallraven Kanken is associated with. Plus, real tags don't have a row that says size, only ART and COL
It's a well made fake and I almost couldn't tell the difference, but the stitching gave it away.

However, factory workers in Vietnam or China sneak out these bags and sell them to merchants like those in Ho Chi Minh City. A friend of mine owns three Kankens (bought them from the official website) and she went on vacation to Vietnam and chanced upon original Kankens there for half the price of the original. She bought two. The biggest differences between her original Kankens and the factory rejects were the rejects usually had errors in stitches (although very, veeery minimal) and the logo on one of the bags was not as reflective as the other one and the three she bought from the site.

  70. Hi, Thank you for this post, we are the Official Stockist for Fjallraven Kanken and have many problems competeing against fake sites. We even had one customer ordering a genuine bag from us and then returning a fake bag and asking for a full refund, not good :(. We were originally known as ilovemykanken.com then rebranded to mykankenbag.com and we've recently changed to www.myfoxbag.com
